What may have been a "wake and bake" session for a University of Georgia student went terribly awry Sunday afterthe 18-year-old man was arrested and later charged with drug and alcohol offenses.

University of Georgia police were called to the man's dormitory room in Creswell Hall after a resident advisor noticed the smell of marijuana wafting through the dormitory. Police were able to trace the smell of burning pot to the man's room.

According to police reports, the man answered the door when the police knocked and was very polite and cooperative with them. He signed a consent form that allowed police to search his half of the dormitory room.

During the search, police found a metal pipe, two glass pipes, a bottle of marijuana, rolling papers and a plastic bottle of alcohol.

After officers confirmed that the man was under 21 years old, he was arrested. He was later charged with possession of drug-related objects, underage possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana.

Although we weren't there personally, of course, it seems from what we know that this man tried to quickly indulge in an illicit activity at a quiet time of day when he thought no one would notice and then ended up paying a huge price for his indiscretion. This should serve as a warning to all University of Georgia students that police do not take drug or underage alcohol offenses lightly. In many cases, defendants have to work very hard to make sure that they are not forced to overpay for their mistakes.
